Mrvan Announces DHSI Grant Award for Calumet College of St. Joseph
Merrillville, IN - Today, Rep. Frank J. Mrvan announced a federal grant award for Calumet College of St. Joseph under the Department of Education’s Developing Hispanic-Serving Institutions (DHSI) program.
According to the Department of Education, Calumet College of Saint Joseph will receive $600,000 to create a model career pathway that will place students in high-demand, high-wage careers in health services by enhancing student support and increasing cultural-competency among faculty and staff. The program will provide health and holistic wellness services to students to increase resiliency and promote success in college and the workplace.
The DHSI program provides grants to assist HSIs to expand educational opportunities for, and improve the attainment of, Hispanic students. The DHSI program grants also enable HSIs to expand and enhance their academic offerings, program quality, and institutional stability.
“I thank all of the educators and leaders at Calumet College of St. Joseph for their efforts to secure this critical funding that will prepare students for careers in healthcare,” stated Rep. Mrvan. “I am proud to support Hispanic-serving institutions of higher education, and I look forward to continuing to expand educational opportunities for students across Northwest Indiana.”
"This funding provides significant support to help further some of our strategic priorities and to move toward our vision of being a vital and valued resource for the region," Calumet College President Dr. Amy McCormack said. "It strengthens the institution overall by building on the primary strength that emerged in a comprehensive analysis, our culture of belonging and support and a strong sense of community. These new initiatives will help all students move forward -- and upward -- in life."
Dr. Ginger Rodriguez, Project Manager for both this grant and an earlier Department of Education grant, added that these resources will support student success in school and in careers. "Synergies between these two programs will mean that we will be able to provide additional support for student access, achievement, and success. Ultimately, that success benefits not only students and their families, but the community where we live and work as well."
