Congressman helps land funding for license plate readers in MC
United States Rep. Frank J. Mrvan, D-Highland, helped the Michigan City Police Department land a $180,000 federal grant for new technology, his office announced.
Mrvan requested Federal Community Project Funding for the Michigan City Police Department. The funding program was created when Congress approved the 2024 budget. The funding will go mainly toward license plate readers for the department.
"We appreciate Congressman Mrvan’s commitment to public health and safety in Michigan City. This grant will allow us to continue improving our use of technology and keeping our community and residents safe. Thank you so much," Michigan City Mayor Mayor Angie Nelson Deuitch said in the news release announcing the funding.
The $180,000 is intended mainly for purchase of the license plate readers officers use when on patrol to scan for criminals, traffic violators and drivers with open warrants out for their arrest.
“Congratulations to Mayor Nelson Deuitch and all of the leaders with the Michigan City Police Department on the success of this collaborative effort to ensure law enforcement officers have the technology and equipment they need to keep our communities safe,"
“I would like to thank Congressman Mrvan for supporting the crime fighting efforts of the Michigan City Police Department. The federal funding from this grant will provide upgraded technology in the form of automated license plate readers, which will allow MCPD to continue to better serve and protect the community," Michigan City Police Chief Marty Corley said.
