The U.S. Department of Justice has awarded a $300,000 grant to the city of Hammond to fund the purchase and deployment of gunshot detection technology in neighborhoods prone to gun violence.

The Rural and Small Department Violent Crime Reduction Grant allocated to the Hammond Police Department aims to improve public safety, decrease gun violence and speed medical assistance to shooting victims.

"ShotSpotter is a proven, innovative technology designed to swiftly and accurately detect gunfire incidents, allowing our law enforcement personnel to respond rapidly and effectively to potential threats," said Hammond Police Lt. Steve Kellogg.

"This integration marks a pivotal step towards bolstering our community's safety and security, reinforcing our dedication to creating a safer living environment for all."

U.S. Rep. Frank J. Mrvan, D-Hammond, whose 1st House District spans Lake, Porter and northwest LaPorte counties, commended Hammond officials for seeking and obtaining federal funding to enhance public safety in district's most populous city.

"I applaud the initiative of Mayor McDermott and all of the leaders of the city of Hammond and the police department to successfully utilize this important federal resource," Mrvan said. "Let us continue to collaborate to improve the ability of all of our police officers to perform their invaluable services and keep our communities safe."
