Mrvan honors Northwest Indiana arts organizations to celebrate Black History Month

February 20, 2024

The African American musicians, performers and other artists who call Northwest Indiana home recently took center stage at the U.S. House as Congressman Frank J. Mrvan, D-Highland, celebrated their accomplishments as part of Black History Month.

The two-term lawmaker representing Lake, Porter and northwest LaPorte counties told his congressional colleagues, and the nation, he has "great respect and sincere admiration" for the many "noteworthy and inspiring arts-based organizations" in Indiana's 1st District.

Mrvan specifically cited on the House floor the accomplishments of the West Side Theater Guild, Marshall J. Gardener Center for the Arts, Glen Theatre, Miller Beach Arts and Creative District, Gary Theatre Ensemble and the Morning Bishop Playhouse Theater.

He also mentioned in the Congressional Record other Region arts organizations, past and present, including Vee-Jay Records, Gary International Black Film Festival, Gary Theatre Ensemble, the Gary Public Murals and Statues Program and the Gary Public Art Competition.

"For their unwavering dedication to preserving and honoring African Americans and the arts, each organization, program and its members are worthy of the very highest praise," Mrvan said.

The theme of this year's Black History Month — African Americans and the Arts — seeks to highlight the important work of African American artists across the country who preserve history, enrich communities and create empowerment through the visual and performing arts, including literature, film, music, fashion, culinary, architecture and more.

In that vein, Mrvan encouraged everyone to take time this February to honor "the countless African Americans who have played such a critical role in enriching our culture through the arts."

"Let us commend each of them for their profound passion, creativity and perseverance as they have enhanced the quality of life for all Americans," Mrvan said.
