Congressman Frank J. Mrvan announced a federal grant award for HealthLinc under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) – Teaching Health Center Planning and Development (THCPD) program on March 28, 2023.
According to HHS’ Health Resources and Services Administration, the THCPD program establishes new accredited community-based health care programs in order to address shortages in the health care workforce and challenges faced by rural and underserved communities.
A local health organization has received a federal grant to help address the shortage of dental practitioners in underserved areas of Northwest Indiana.

First Lady of the US (FLOTUS) Dr. Jill Biden flew into Valparaiso over spring break to promote the Biden administration’s support of clean energy and community colleges. Much of Northwest Indiana’s industries have historically been based around energy. Efforts and new programming at Valparaiso’s Ivy Tech Community College are working towards preparing a workforce for renewable energy.

As the U.S. Representative for Indiana’s First Congressional District, I am dedicated to working with all levels of government and stakeholders in a bipartisan fashion to ensure that the long-term economic potential and growth of our region is realized.
First Lady Jill Biden was in Valparaiso Monday, touting the Biden Administration's career training efforts. She met with students and faculty in Ivy Tech Community College's renewable energy program, who demonstrated what they've learned in the fields of electric line technology, wind energy and solar energy.
The first lady, herself a community college professor, said those schools are a big part of her husband's efforts to rebuild the middle class. “This program is giving them good-paying jobs and protecting the planet for the next generation,” Biden said.
First Lady Dr. Jill Biden visited Ivy Tech Community College in Valparaiso Monday. The First Lady spent time with faculty, students and members of the labor force showing her support for the nation’s community colleges. The school gave her a tour of the renewable energy labs where she met with high school students in dual enrollment to discuss and demonstrate what they have learned. Dr. Biden said community colleges will train the future workforce.

Biden greeted students and faculty, specifically those involved in renewable energy and technology programs. Both high school and college students had the opportunity to meet the First Lady, who works at a Virginia community college herself.
