The Rev. Curtis Whittaker said he knew nothing about growing food nine years ago when he had a vision to start the garden that became Faith Farms CDC.

On Monday, a raised garden bed at the Gary urban farm was surrounded by local dignitaries with trowels in their hands as they planted seeds to celebrate a new partnership between the urban garden and the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana.

Gov. Eric Holcomb and U.S. Rep. Frank J. Mrvan, D-Highland, took a victory lap of sorts Tuesday in recognition of their joint efforts to position Northwest Indiana to grow and thrive in the years and decades ahead.

The St. John and Lowell volunteer fire departments are each getting about half a million in federal funding. The St. John Fire Department has been awarded almost $491,000, and the Lowell Volunteer Fire Department was awarded almost $511,000 from the Department of Homeland Security's Assistance to Firefighters Grant program.

Hoosier women whose pregnancy care or delivery is covered by Medicaid are now permitted to remain enrolled in the federal-state health program, regardless of their family income, for up to one year after giving birth.

The U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services recently approved the request of Indiana's Family and Social Services Administration to extend postpartum Medicaid coverage for a full year, instead of the prior limit of 60 days.

America's Race competitor Everett Pain, 15, didn't appear to break a sweat as he effortlessly crossed the finish line.

The steady rain Sunday didn't bother and might have helped Pain, a sophomore at Hinsdale Central High School.

"The rain cooled me off," Pain said.

Pain, who is from Clarendon Hills, Illinois, was the winner in the 5K championship obstacle course at Indiana Dunes National Park West Beach held in recognition of the 21st anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

The Portage Township YMCA is currently celebrating 30 days of advocacy, and to help raise support for its community programs, the Portage Township YMCA has invited many local, state, and federal legislators to come and see the YMCA’s programs for themselves. On Wednesday, August 31, Congressman Frank Mrvan came out to volunteer for the YMCA’s federally funded food program and got to understand the program on a more intimate level.

Rep. Frank J. Mrvan announced a federal grant award for the City of Portage Fire Department under the Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program.

The Portage Fire Department will receive $201,192 to obtain critically needed resources to equip and train emergency personnel and enhance their operational efficiencies.  According to the Department of Homeland Security, the AFG program aims to meet the firefighting and emergency response needs of fire departments and non-affiliated emergency medical service organizations.

Indiana will receive $187 million to expand its broadband capacity under the American Rescue Plan, connecting more than 50,000 Hoosiers to high-speed broadband internet, as announced by the U.S. Treasury Department Tuesday. 

The funding comes from the federal Capital Projects Fund, with Indiana’s allocation composing more than a quarter of the total $408 million funding for five states. The other states are Nebraska, Connecticut, Arkansas and North Dakota.

The Silos at Sanders Farm industrial complex represents a $225 million investment in Merrillville, but the project carries other meaning.

U.S. Rep. Frank Mrvan described it as a “beacon of hope” because of the many construction jobs the project will create.

“When we develop and build these buildings, there are going to be managers and workers who are going to have jobs that are going to pay for their healthcare,” Mrvan said.
