Mrvan Statement on Section 232 Steel Tariffs in Response to WTO Announcement

December 12, 2022

Washington, DC - Today, Rep. Frank J. Mrvan released the following statement in response to the recent World Trade Organization (WTO) announcement regarding the U.S. Section 232 steel tariffs.

“As a Co-Chair of the Congressional Steel Caucus and representative for one of the largest steel producing districts in our nation, I have adamantly supported the value and continuation of the Section 232 steel tariffs.  The American steel industry and our incredible steelworkers are essential to the strength of our national economy and our national defense.  We must not rely on foreign nations that violate U.S. trade laws and use illegal subsidies to provide steel products that are necessary for our national security, including the construction of our tanks, aircraft carriers, and armored vehicles.  The recent pandemic has demonstrated the strategic importance of our supply chain networks, and I look forward to continuing to work with the administration and all of my colleagues to ensure that American steelworkers, producers, and all manufacturers can compete on a level playing field.”

In the 117th Congress, Congressman Mrvan has taken the following actions in support of the Section 232 steel tariffs:

  • On February 2, 2021, Rep. Mrvan led a Congressional Steel Caucus letter to President Biden in support of the Section 232 steel tariffs.
  • On March 24, 2021, Rep. Mrvan issued a statement in support of the Economic Policy Institute’s report that found that Section 232 tariffs delivered immediate benefits to the domestic steel industry.
  • On July 20, 2022, Rep. Mrvan convened a Congressional Steel Caucus hearing with domestic steel industry representatives that highlighted the value of Section 232 steel tariffs.
  • On July 21, 2022, Rep. Mrvan testified during the U.S. International Trade Commission’s hearing on the economic impact of Section 232 steel tariffs.
