Representative Frank Mrvan announced Wednesday a federal grant award for the Town of Burns Harbor from the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Grant program.

According to the DOT, the Town of Burns Harbor will receive $120,000 under the SS4A Grant program, which aims to improve roadway safety by supporting communities in developing plans to implement infrastructure projects designed to reduce transportation-related fatalities and serious injuries.

The United States Department of Commerce will impose tariffs on tin mill products after a surge hurt American steelmakers, leading U.S. Steel to idle its tin operations at Gary Works.

It will impose tariffs of between 2.69% and 331.88% on steelmakers from Canada, Germany, Korea and China.

U.S. Rep. Frank Mrvan recently presented United Way of La Porte County with funding for new mental health initiatives.

The Michigan City-based organization will use the funding to better understand and address youth mental health and substance concerns in La Porte County.

The project will include a youth mental health and substance abuse needs assessment for the county. It will provide community education and outreach to youth and their families.

A $400,000 federal grant will help the Porter County Sheriff’s Office with technology upgrades for its officers and pay for traffic cameras that track license plates of suspect vehicles.

A $127 million federal grant, announced this week, will help the Indiana Department of Transportation implement ways to improve safety and reduce congestion on the Borman Expressway.

The Borman — the name for Interstates 80 and 94 in Lake County — is Indiana’s busiest interstate corridor, carrying more than 200,000 vehicles a day from the Illinois state line to Interstate 65.

The grant from the National Infrastructure Project Assistance program, known as MEGA, will pay for more than half of the anticipated $212.5 million cost of the Borman FlexRoad project.

State and federal officials have announced a $127 million grant award received by the Indiana Department of Transportation through the National Infrastructure Project Assistance program to support the I-80/I-94 FlexRoad project in Northwest Indiana.

“FlexRoad represents a transformational opportunity to improve mobility and safety, while also providing better access to employment hubs and destinations for those who live and work near the corridor,” Holcomb said.
