The Hobart Police Department will receive a $200,000 grant from the Department of Justice’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services Law Enforcement Mental Health and Wellness Act program, according to a news release. 

Rep. Frank Mrvan, D-01, announced the grant in a news release Thursday. The grant aims to improve the delivery and access of mental health and wellness resources, the release states.

The Hobart Police Department is looking to boost its support for its officers' mental health, thanks to a federal grant.

The Department of Justice has awarded the department $200,000 through its Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Law Enforcement Mental Health and Wellness Act program. That can be used for things like training, peer support, family resources and suicide prevention, according to a press release from U.S. Representative Frank Mrvan.

The U.S. Department of Education recently awarded a grant totaling $65,700 to the Crown Point university to connect students with local, high-quality child care in the hope of improving student recruitment, retention and graduation rates.

The Midwest Alliance for Clean Hydrogen (MachH2), a partnership of over 60 public and private entities across Indiana, Illinois and Michigan, will receive up to $1 billion in federal Department of Energy (DOE) funds for the development of hydrogen technology and infrastructure, the White House announced on Friday.

The news was celebrated by elected officials and industry leaders in Northwest Indiana who pushed for the funding, but prompted a skeptical reaction from environmental advocates who say that MachH2′s plans don’t do enough to fight climate change.

Indiana, Illinois and Michigan are landing $1 billion in funding for a Midwest Hydrogen Hub that could safeguard the future of local industry in a world that aims to eliminate carbon emissions.

The U.S. Department of Energy announced it would fund the Midwest Alliance for Clean Hydrogen, or MachH2, hub, intended to create many sources of hydrogen production, including at the BP Whiting Refinery. The hydrogen could then be used at local steel mills to cut down on carbon emissions.

The U.S. Department of Justice has awarded a $300,000 grant to the city of Hammond to fund the purchase and deployment of gunshot detection technology in neighborhoods prone to gun violence.

The Rural and Small Department Violent Crime Reduction Grant allocated to the Hammond Police Department aims to improve public safety, decrease gun violence and speed medical assistance to shooting victims.
