Daily Update on Federal Disaster Response in Northwest Indiana

As we continue in the storm recovery, I wanted to share information today on certain assistance that is now available from the City of Gary.

According to the City of Gary, they have partnered with CoAction and the Legacy Foundation to establish the City of Gary Derecho Emergency Household Assistance Program.

This assistance is open to verified City of Gary residents who suffered direct impacts from the August 11 storm and power outages. Priority is given to households at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level.

Financial assistance ranges from $350 to $1,000 per household. Once approved, direct payments are targeted for distribution within 24 to 48 hours.

Applications will be taken over the phone only by dialing CoAction at (219) 794-1841 during the hours of 8:30am to 5:00pm. Please note this is the only phone number to call to apply.

During the phone application process, CoAction will collect each applicant’s contact information. Applicants will also receive information regarding the check pickup location and timing as part of the application process. This is the only number to call to apply, so please beware of scams.

Applications will remain open for a 30-day rapid-response period following the public launch date of September 4, 2026. You may read about the program’s full details at www.gary.gov/stormrecovery.

As always, please contact my Merrillville District Office at 219-795-1844 or at mrvan.house.gov if you need any assistance or should you have any questions.
