Daily Update on Federal Disaster Response in Northwest Indiana

Following the severe weather and devastating damage our communities have experienced, Governor Braun has submitted a Major Disaster Declaration request to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

This step is the crucial step toward securing federal assistance for communities, families, businesses, and local governments impacted by the disaster. I am joining my colleagues in the Indiana Congressional Delegation to send a letter supporting the Governor’s request for this declaration.

While we await the President’s approval, I continue to stress that you should contact Indiana 211 to report storm damage by calling 211 or 866-211-9966 or going online to https://in211.communityos.org. Documenting the damage is essential as we move forward with the request for additional federal assistance.

Please also visit IDHS’s August Disaster Resource Hub at: on.in.gov/August2026Disaster. The hub also includes the application for the State Disaster Relief Fund. Impacted residents may qualify for emergency aid grants of up to $5,000. This fund is designed to help families secure essential items like clothing and uninsured medical devices while they are displaced from their homes.

As additional information becomes available regarding the Major Disaster Declaration request, and the next steps should the declaration be approved, I will share this information with you through the daily updates and through social media.

Northwest Indiana is resilient. I extend my sincere gratitude and thanks to our local officials, first responders, nonprofit organizations, community groups, and volunteers who have stepped up to help their neighbors. From cleaning debris and cleaning up properties to providing food, supplies, and other essential assistance, your compassion and hard work are making a meaningful difference.
