Michigan City Celebrates Grand Opening of 11th Street South Shore Line Station and Parking Garage
On June 18, Mayor Angie Nelson Deuitch, along with city, regional, and state partners, welcomed the public to the Grand Opening of the South Shore Line’s 11th Street Station and Parking Structure during a celebratory ribbon-cutting ceremony. The event marks a major milestone in the City’s ongoing revitalization efforts and in the broader Double Track Northwest Indiana Project.
The public will have access to the newly completed train platform, station amenities including seating and restrooms, and over 500 parking spaces, providing enhanced access and convenience for South Shore Line riders.
“This station is more than a transportation hub—it’s a symbol of Michigan City’s momentum,” Nelson Deuitch said. “It reflects years of hard work, partnership, and a shared commitment to strengthening our city and region.”
The new station is part of a transformative effort led by the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District (NICTD) in partnership with the City of Michigan City, Flaherty & Collins, and numerous regional collaborators. Adjacent the station, Flaherty & Collins continues development on The Franklin at 11th Street Station, a mixed-use project that will bring new apartments, retail, and commercial space to the downtown area.
The Double Track Northwest Indiana Project was funded by the Federal Transit Administration, NICTD (South Shore Line), the State of Indiana, the Northwest Indiana Regional Development Authority, the City of Michigan City, LaPorte County, the City of South Bend, and St. Joseph County.
Special recognition goes to the LaPorte County officials and the County Council, including long-time NICTD Board Member Mark Yagelski, whose significant financial commitment in 2017 helped move the project forward at a critical time. Their support, along with contributions from local, state, and federal partners, helped ensure this vision became a reality.
The City also acknowledges the steadfast support of leaders past and present, including former Gov. Eric Holcomb, U.S. Sen. Todd Young, Gov. Mike Braun, U.S. Rep. Frank Mrvan, U.S. Rep. Rudy Yakym, former U.S. Rep. Pete Visclosky, and the late U.S. Rep. Jackie Walorski.
Together, these collective efforts have positioned Michigan City as a vital connector within the Northwest Indiana region—where economic development, mobility, and community growth intersect.
