Mrvan welcomes federal disaster relief for Northwest Indiana following storms

August 18, 2026

Congressman Frank J. Mrvan, D-Highland, is applauding the Federal Emergency Management Agency for speeding federal assistance to Northwest Indiana following last week's severe storms that toppled trees and knocked out power to more than 300,000 Region residents.

"On behalf of the residents of Indiana's 1st Congressional District, I thank the administration for its prompt approval of Indiana's request for a federal emergency declaration," Mrvan said Monday.

"This assistance will provide critical resources to communities across Northwest Indiana as they recover from the devastating impact of severe weather, flooding and tornadoes."

The three-term lawmaker said his office is working with federal, state and local officials to obtain every available resource to support residents, families and communities affected by the storms.

"Residents who have suffered damage are encouraged to report it through Indiana 211 at 866-211-9966. My office will continue to provide updates as additional federal assistance becomes available," Mrvan said.

The federal emergency declaration, approved Saturday by Republican President Donald Trump, authorizes FEMA to coordinate federal relief efforts to alleviate storm-related hardships, as well as to provide appropriate assistance to save lives, protect property, and preserve public health and safety.

Republican Gov. Mike Braun requested federal aid after issuing a statewide disaster declaration Thursday and mobilizing the Indiana National Guard to respond to storm-ravaged communities in Northwest Indiana.
