Mrvan Sends Letter to USPS on Wheeler Post Office
Washington, DC – Today, Congressman Frank J. Mrvan released a letter he recently sent to the United States Postal Service (USPS) regarding the Wheeler Post Office.
The letter states that the Congressman is deeply concerned that the prolonged closure of the Wheeler Post Office has made it exceedingly difficult for constituents to access convenient, reliable, and efficient postal services, and urges the USPS to promptly restore such services.
The text of the letter is below and a pdf is available here.
“I write to you regarding the Wheeler, IN Post Office, previously located at 305 Railroad Avenue, Wheeler, IN 46393. I am deeply concerned that the prolonged closure of the Wheeler Post Office has made it exceedingly difficult for my constituents to access convenient, reliable, and efficient postal services. I urge USPS to promptly restore postal services for the residents of Wheeler and provide a detailed update on the status of USPS efforts related to Wheeler mail services.
“Since the closure of the Wheeler Post Office in July 2023 due to health and safety concerns at the facility, residents of Wheeler have had to travel to the Hobart Post Office to collect their mail. This creates significant barriers for Wheeler residents, as the area does not receive door-to-door mail delivery service. As a result, instead of having 24-hour access to their P.O. boxes, residents must find time during businesses hours to go to Hobart to collect critical mail – including financial documents, prescription medicine, and Social Security checks.
“Over the past two years, I have heard from residents and local elected officials about the disruptive impact of the Wheeler Post Office closure, and my office has submitted several casework inquiries on behalf of constituents regarding this issue. I also met with USPS liaisons in December 2025 to discuss this matter.
“While USPS has assured my office that management is seeking options for P.O. box mail delivery to return to the Wheeler community, the agency has not yet provided concrete information on the timeline for restoring postal services in Wheeler. This has created further uncertainty for local officials working to serve residents, including for Union Township, which previously tried to lease land to USPS for a drop-in-place Post Office.
“The USPS universal service obligation dictates that all Americans receive reliable, affordable, and consistent mail service regardless of location. To fulfill this promise to Wheeler residents, I urge USPS to expeditiously restore services in Wheeler and publicly provide transparent information on the status of these efforts. I look forward to your prompt response and stand ready to work together to ensure continued access to essential postal services in Indiana’s First Congressional District.”
