The Gary Police Department announced on Monday a $264,000 federal investment in advanced license plate reading systems to enhance its crime-fighting technology. 

Funded through the Community Project Funding grant program and secured by U.S. Rep. Frank J. Mrvan, D-1st, Gary’s representative in the U.S. House, the investment will equip Gary’s police force with both stationary and mobile camera devices.

The Gary Police Department is preparing to expand its network of fixed and mobile license plate reader (LPR) cameras using $264,000 in federal funds earmarked for the project by U.S. Rep. Frank J. Mrvan, D-Highland.

The Northwest Indiana congressman said Monday he was honored to support front-line police officers and their work to improve public safety in the Steel City during a tour of the Real Time Crime Center inside Gary's police headquarters building.

U.S. Rep. Frank Mrvan announced 15 Community Project Funding requests he made for Indiana’s First Congressional District for fiscal year 2025.

The requests, which total approximately $11 million, have been included in the House Appropriations Committee bills and must be approved by Congress before being signed into law, according to a Tuesday release.

Northwest Indiana's congressman has requested more than $11 million in federal funds to help meet the needs of local governments and police departments, and to improve air, rail and water infrastructure across the Region.

U.S. Rep. Frank J. Mrvan, D-Highland, is seeking the money through Community Project Funding requests, more commonly known as earmarks, that are expected to be part of the House appropriations measures that will fund the federal government during the 2025 budget year.

Federal funding secured by U.S. Rep. Frank J. Mrvan, D-Highland, will enable the city of LaPorte to improve water quality and public safety by separating more of its sanitary sewer and storm sewer flow.

The two-term Northwest Indiana congressman earmarked $959,000 for the LaPorte sewer project in the 2024 federal spending measures approved by Congress and enacted by the president in March.

The city of La Porte has received $959,000 in Community Project Funding from the federal government to repair infrastructure from Lincoln Way to Kingsbury Avenue along Indiana Avenue.

During a press conference held Monday in the La Porte County Public Library’s Reading Wifi Garden, La Porte Mayor Tom Dermody said the almost $1 million in federal funding will be used for La Porte’s sewer separation project that will coincide with the Indiana Department of Transportation’s [INDOT] reconstruction of U.S. 35.

The Congressional Steel Caucus is voicing concerns about a potential trade status change for Vietnam that could lighten steel tariffs.

Vietnam filed a request with the U.S. Department of Commerce that it be labeled a market economy for trade and tariff purposes. The federal agency is now reviewing that request and may soon reach a determination.

The City of La Porte is the recipient of over $959,000 in Community Project Funding from the federal government, which will assist the city’s ongoing efforts to replace combined sewers with new, separate sanitary and stormwater sewer facilities. Mrvan, who was key in securing these dollars for the city, said he was glad to assist in the funding of such a critical project.
