Carmeuse, a major supplier to the steel mills along the lakefront, is investing $1 million in its Buffington Harbor plant.
United States Rep. Frank J. Mrvan, D-Highland, toured the plant Wednesday, touting how steel tariffs have protected jobs and encouraged investment there. Gary Mayor Eddie Melton, American Iron and Steel Institute President and CEO Kevin Dempsey and union leaders visited the facility on the Lake Michigan lakeshore that provides lime and limestone, key ingredients in steelmaking, to local steel mills.

Lake County Parks and Recreation is receiving more than $700,000 in grants for Gibson Woods Nature Preserve in Hammond, Rep. Frank Mrvan announced.
“I grew up playing in Gibson Woods and am proud that Northwest Indiana is home to such incredible environmental wonders for residents and visitors to enjoy,” Mrvan said in his Monday news release. “I applaud all of the leaders with Lake County Parks and Recreation for this initiative to enhance and improve access to the natural treasures of Gibson Woods in Hammond.”
Northwest Indiana Congressman Frank J. Mrvan, D-Highland, is celebrating the award of a federal grant to improve public access to the Gibson Woods Nature Preserve on Hammond's northeast side.
Mrvan recently confirmed Lake County Parks and Recreation will receive $712,412 for the project through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Great Lakes Restoration Initiative program.

U.S. Rep. Frank Mrvan made some jabs at the Trump administration and the Republican leaders in Congress while answering constituents’ questions about redistricting, immigration and other issues on Wednesday at a Portage town hall meeting.
“They are masters at distraction,” he said.
First District U.S. Rep. Frank Mrvan, D-Highland, and other members of the Congressional Steel Caucus are urging the Trump administration not to use tariffs on steel as a bargaining chip in upcoming trade negotiations.
The caucus, which consists of more than 100 members of Congress from parts of the country that make steel or supply the steel industry, sent a letter asking the administration to maintain the 50% tariffs on most foreign-made steel during trade talks.
Imports of corrosion-resistant steel have been surging, jumping by 46% year-over-year in 2024.
The Gary / Chicago International Airport has announced an acceleration in the construction schedule of the first phase of its cargo services expansion project, now planned for completion by the end of the year.
Receipt of a previously allocated $9.82 million grant will allow the airport to construct all eight planned wide-bodied aircraft parking positions simultaneously, the airport said.
The infrastructure will be situated on about 25 acres of concrete ramp as part of the Phase 1 cargo expansion.
