U.S. Rep. Frank Mrvan stressed the importance of bipartisanship Friday in his appearance at the Lake County Advancement Committee.

“I will work in a bipartisan way. I have done that, and I believe that that’s the thirst of our community,” he said.

“The newspapers and TV stations (in Washington, D.C.), they don’t push a lot of harmony. They don’t push a lot of bipartisan approaches how things get done,” Mrvan said. “Veteran Affairs, we work, Democrats and Republicans, to make sure our veterans get the benefits necessary. That’s why I like being on that committee.”

Hundreds of steelworkers chanted "We supply America" as U.S. Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh, United Steelworkers President Tom Conway, U.S. Rep. Frank Mrvan, Cleveland-Cliffs CEO Lourenco Goncalves and others rallied support Monday for a $1 trillion infrastructure bill at a Region union hall.

Steelworkers from across Northwest Indiana gathered at USW Local 6787 in Chesterton on the first stop of a national bus touring calling for more infrastructure investment.

“As a member of Congress, it’s making sure that we continue that collaborative effort between the federal government, the state government and the local agencies to make sure that we’re all fulfilling the need in getting those resources to the people so that they’re able to stay in their home,” Mrvan said.

U.S. Rep. Frank Mrvan and local and state officials outlined how the American Jobs Plan will directly benefit Indiana workers and their families, and urged them to discuss the benefits with others.

During a meeting Tuesday at the Laborers’ International Union of North America Local 81, Mrvan, D-Highland, called on the union members and leaders to support President Joe Biden’s American Jobs Plan because it’s the next step to the American Rescue Plan.

Ground was broken Tuesday on two sewer projects in Gary worth $7 million in investment in the city’s sewer system.

The Calumet Region Gary Sanitary District 13th Avenue Sewer Improvement Project and the Water Treatment Plant Grit Dewatering Improvement project will improve the quality of life for residents and reduce flooding during heavy storms, officials said.

After opening its doors in the midst of a pandemic, NorthShore Health Centers celebrated the opening of its new Hammond facility with a visit from U.S. Rep. Frank J. Mrvan. 

Mrvan, former North Township trustee, cut the ribbon for the new center and later toured the facility, which opened its doors in January at 1828 165th St.

Crown Point Mayor David Uran, U.S. Rep. Frank J. Mrvan and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers marked the end of a sanitary sewer infrastructure improvement project in the city Wednesday.

City employees and audience members alike watched as a red ribbon was cut signifying the end of the project, which Uran said will allow for more growth in the city.
