Mrvan Announces AFG Grant Award for Liberty Township Volunteer Fire Department

Washington, DC – Today, Rep. Frank J. Mrvan announced a federal grant award for the Liberty Township Volunteer Fire Department under the Department of Homeland Security's Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program. 

According to the Department of Homeland Security, the Liberty Township Volunteer Fire Department in Chesterton will receive $247,200 to make critical improvements to operations and safety, equip and train emergency personnel, and enhance operational efficiencies.  In general, the AFG program aims to meet the firefighting and emergency response needs of fire departments and non-affiliated emergency medical service organizations.

Congressman Mrvan stated, “I am proud to support federal funding for first responders throughout Northwest Indiana to ensure they have the proper training and resources to keep our communities safe.  Congratulations to the Liberty Township Volunteer Fire Department for their successful efforts to secure these federal resources and improve their dedicated abilities to serve our region at a moment’s notice every day.”

Lieutenant Matthew Wineland stated, "On behalf of my department, we are beyond excited to have received such a highly competitive award from FEMA AFG.  When I first received notification, I was in tears because I knew how much this life-saving equipment meant to help protect my fellow firefighters.” 

Liberty Township Volunteer Fire Department is an all-volunteer organization that serves Liberty and Jackson Townships in Porter County with approximately 18,000 residents covering roughly 51 square miles.
