September 2, 2022

Merrillville, IN – Today, Rep. Frank J. Mrvan announced federal grant awards for the Whiting Fire Department and the Beverly Shores Volunteer Fire Department under the Department of Homeland Security's Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program.

The Whiting Fire Department will receive $26,666, and the Beverly Shores Volunteer Fire Department will receive $123,479, to obtain critically needed resources to equip and train emergency personnel and enhance operational efficiencies.  According to the Department of Homeland Security, the AFG program aims to meet the firefighting and emergency response needs of fire departments and non-affiliated emergency medical service organizations.

Congressman Mrvan stated, “I commend the leaders of the Whiting Fire Department and the Beverly Shores Volunteer Fire Department for their successful efforts to secure these essential federal resources.  I am grateful for the selfless and dedicated work that our fire departments and all first responders exhibit on a daily basis, and I will continue to work to support federal resources that help improve the abilities of all first responders to keep our communities safe.”

“This award is huge for our department and vastly improves the safety and living conditions for our firefighters.  The City of Whiting and the Whiting Fire Department would like to thank Congressman Mrvan and his continuing support of our first responders,” stated Whiting Fire Chief Don Harbin.

Last month, Rep. Mrvan announced that the Portage Fire Department would receive an AFG award in the amount of $201,192.
