Mrvan Statement on Venezuela
Washington, DC – Today, Rep. Frank J. Mrvan released the statement below following the recent U.S. military action in Venezuela.
“There is no question that Maduro is a bad actor, and I know firsthand the drastic harm that international drug cartels have caused individuals and communities throughout Northwest Indiana. I am aware that Maduro has been indicted in the United States on narco-terrorism charges and will be given a fair trial in the United States, as was Honduran President Hernandez, who without explanation was recently pardoned by President Trump. Like Hernandez, Maduro is responsible for immense human suffering, including the flow of deadly drugs that have cost American lives and destroyed communities.
“I believe that Congress must be consulted and included in any discussion involving this type of military or enforcement action. While the Constitution grants the Executive Branch broad authority in foreign affairs, it also clearly establishes a role for Congress, particularly when American troops may be placed in harm’s way. I am deeply concerned about the precedent set when this balance is ignored, and I look forward to Congress hearing directly from the Administration on this matter as soon as possible.”
