Rep. Mrvan Delivers Over $6 Million in Community Project Funding to the City of Gary

April 21, 2022

Gary, IN – Yesterday, Rep. Frank J. Mrvan (IN-01), delivered $6,682,000 in community project funding as part of the Fiscal Year 2022 Appropriations Legislation to the City of Gary.

The Gary Sanitation Department received $3,500,000 in community project funding to address critical water, sanitary sewer, and stormwater sewer infrastructure improvements designed to alleviate deteriorated conditions, increase the efficacy of existing systems, and improve water quality impacts.

The Gary/Chicago International Airport received $2,000,000 in community project funding for equipment acquisition of up to four snow removal and/or emergency services vehicles, which will support more reliable and efficient responses to snow removal and preparation for unforeseen events. The new equipment will also reduce the Airport’s annual maintenance expenses that are incurred from maintaining old equipment.

The Marquette Greenway Trail received $682,000 in community project funding to support Gary’s efforts to address the gap in the Marquette Greenway Trail, from Bridge Street east to the Gary/Hammond municipal border. Work to complete this trail segment will provide a safer and more equitable non-motorized transportation network, and also provide more opportunities for recreation, fitness, and connectivity to regional parks and natural areas.

The Gary Police Department received $500,000 in community project funding for technology upgrades to obtain additional laptops and mobile data terminals, to ensure each officer possesses an individual unit, and automatic license plate readers that will assist officers in their ability to protect the community.

“Today is a day of promise for the City of Gary. I thank Mayor Jerome Prince, Deputy Mayor Trent McCain, Police Chief Brian Evans, and all of the stakeholders for their partnership to successfully bring more of our federal tax dollars back to Indiana’s First Congressional District,” Rep. Mrvan said. “This announcement shows how when we work together, we can improve public safety, economic development, and the quality of life for everyone.”

"This is an exciting time for all of us in Gary," said Mayor Jerome A. Prince. "Congressman Mrvan and our federal partners continue to find new, valuable resources for our community. This is the kind of community building we have in mind when we ask our friends and neighbors to Reimagine Gary with us."
