Congressman Frank J. Mrvan is hosting a series of town hall-style events Thursday to listen to the needs of Northwest Indiana residents and update them on what he's accomplished on their behalf in the U.S. House.
The Highland Democrat plans to participate in three community forums at locations in Lake, Porter and northwest LaPorte counties.
Ground was ceremonially broken Wednesday for a major utility project in Hebron’s Snake Flats neighborhood, a month after actual construction began.
Grimmer Construction, of Highland, is replacing ancient cast iron four-inch water mains with PVC pipe. The project includes 3,800 feet of eight-inch diameter pipe and 5,100 feet of six-inch pipe.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is handling federal funding for the project. The town provided not only the 25% cash match for the project but also an additional $2.7 million to include two bid options beyond the base bid.
Technology upgrades were likely coming to at least eight Region police departments this year, thanks to federal funding proposals. But now, after last month's federal budget cut state and local law enforcement programs, those upgrades are unlikely to happen on the government's dime.
A new community center is set to open in Shelby in just a couple of weeks, following a dedication ceremony hosted on Tuesday, April 15. The facility, funded with a $5 million donation by the Dean & Barbara White Family Foundation and built by Chester Inc., is set to provide the small town of less than 500 people with a gymnasium, small kitchen, community room, fitness center, and more.
To Portage Mayor Austin Bonta, the Portage Recovery Association’s new home is a bigger deal than attracting a Target store.
“The Portage Recovery Association is essential to creating the kind of community we want to live in,” he said at Saturday’s ribbon cutting for PRA.
“There is no place in Indiana that alcoholism, addiction, is not a problem,” he said. But in Portage, the community is embracing efforts to address that problem rather than sweep it under the rug.
