Mrvan Announces AFG Grant Awards for Lowell and St. John Fire Departments
Merrillville, IN – Today, Rep. Frank J. Mrvan announced federal grant awards for the Lowell Volunteer Fire Department and the St. John Volunteer Fire Department under the Department of Homeland Security's Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program.
The Lowell Volunteer Fire Department will receive $510,857, and the St. John Volunteer Fire Department will receive $490,909 to make critical improvements to operations and safety, equip and train emergency personnel, and enhance operational efficiencies. According to the Department of Homeland Security, the AFG program aims to meet the firefighting and emergency response needs of fire departments and non-affiliated emergency medical service organizations.
Congressman Mrvan stated, “I appreciate the successful and collaborative efforts of the leaders of the Lowell Volunteer Fire Department and the St. John Volunteer Fire Department for securing these federal resources for our district. Supporting first responders is a priority of mine, and I am proud to advocate for this funding that ensures firefighters are prepared in the line of duty.”
Lowell Town Manager Craig Hendrix stated, “The Lowell Volunteer Fire Department appreciates the assistance and the efforts of Congressman Mrvan and his staff in helping us obtain these much needed funds to purchase new self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) air packs, SCBA fill station and SCBA accountability system.”
St. John Fire Chief Kevin LaDuke stated, “The collaborative synergy between our Departments is at an all-time high, this grant will save our citizens and better protect our firefighters. I am appreciative of the FEMA review committee, support from the Dyer Town Council, St. John Public Safety Commission, St. John Town Council, Congressman Mrvan, and Senators Young and Braun.”
Recently, Rep. Mrvan announced AFG grant awards for the Whiting Fire Department, the Beverly Shores Volunteer Fire Department, and the Portage Fire Department.
