Washington, DC – Below, please find the opening statement as prepared for delivery from Congressman Frank J. Mrvan, Vice Chairman of the Congressional Steel Caucus, during today’s hearing on the State of the Steel Industry.
Honoring the nation’s war dead includes working to ensure that surviving veterans get the services they’ve earned, members of the state and federal House Veterans Affairs Committees said during the annual Memorial Day service.
“We must always remember those who have given their lives in service to our country, to honor their sacrifice by working to create a more perfect America,” U.S. Rep. Mark Takano, D-Calif., said.
The city of Portage honored the nation’s fallen veterans this Memorial Day with a service at Founders Square attended by U.S. Reps. Frank Mrvan and Mark Takano, amongst others.
A large crowd attended the event co-hosted by the American Legion Post 260, a nonprofit organization of U.S. war veterans. In addition to speeches by the congressmen, Portage Mayor Sue Lynch, State Rep. Chuck Moseley and Fire Chief Randy Wilkening also honored the nation’s veterans in their remarks.
Every Memorial Day, the City of Portage holds a beautiful ceremony to honor our country’s fallen heroes and thank them for their sacrifice. This year’s Memorial Day Service was just as touching as everyone hoped it would be as veterans, gold star family survivors, and countless community members gathered in Founders Square to remember all the soldiers who didn’t make it home.

Congressman Frank J. Mrvan announced a federal grant award for HealthLinc under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) – Teaching Health Center Planning and Development (THCPD) program.
According to HHS’ Health Resources and Services Administration, the THCPD program establishes new accredited community-based health care programs in order to address shortages in the health care workforce and challenges faced by rural and underserved communities.
Mayor Pete Land recently swore in seven Crown Point Fire Rescue firefighters, the most in the department’s history.
The new firefighters: Brett Wisenbaugh, Ben Rosenfeldt, David Graham, Jackie Osborne, Jason Kooyenga, Joseph Bonk and Meghan Mulroe.
Wisenbaugh was born and raised in Michigan City and has 10 years of experience in EMS.
He has worked as a part-time paramedic with Crown Point Fire Rescue since 2021.
