During a Monday tour of Valparaiso’s VNA NWI Arthur B. and Ethel V. Horton Hospice Center, U.S. Rep. Frank J. Mrvan, D-Highland, asked questions about the services the facility provides, while President and CEO of VNA NWI Bob Franko explained the challenges of running a nonprofit hospice.
Mrvan had requested a tour of the hospice, according to VNA NWI Community Liaison Amy Wulf, and he spent nearly an hour at the facility, meeting the staff and discussing with them how he might be able to help them in Washington.
The Gary/Chicago International Airport has added a new rescue and firefighting truck to its fleet.

The Gary/Chicago International Airport has purchased a new, 3,000-gallon airport rescue and firefighting truck to add to its fleet of equipment that’s 20 years or older.
The new firetruck will be outfitted in the winter with two high-speed runway brooms used for snow removal. Those brooms cost $932,000 and $1.3 million, respectively, according to a news release from the airport.

Much of the Schererville Town Council meeting on Wednesday consisted of accepting grants targeted for a variety of projects, foremost among them an award from the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Railroad Administration’s Railroad Crossing Elimination Grant Program.
The Town Council formally accepted $8.4 million to eliminate the at-grade crossing and build a bridge over the railroad across on Kennedy Avenue, which is part of phase one of the project to extend the road south to U.S. 30.
