Expanding Educational Opportunities

Rep. Mrvan is an active supporter of public schools, teachers, and students.  During his first two terms in office, Rep. Mrvan served on the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, which oversees federal programs and initiatives dealing with education at all levels -- from preschool through high school to higher education and continuing education. These include, elementary and secondary education initiatives, including the No Child Left Behind Act, special education (the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act), teacher quality & teacher training, scientifically-based reading instruction, and vocational and technical education.

Rep. Mrvan looks forward to supporting legislative efforts to gain support for public education through proper funding of school districts, goal-oriented programs, and equal access and support for all students.  Additionally, Rep. Mrvan hosts annual programs for students including the Congressional Art Competition in the spring and the Congressional App Challenge in the fall.

Indiana approved for federal broadband expansion funding

Indiana will receive $187 million to expand its broadband capacity under the American Rescue Plan, connecting more than 50,000 Hoosiers to high-speed broadband internet, as announced by the U.S. Treasury Department Tuesday. 

The funding comes from the federal Capital Projects Fund, with Indiana’s allocation composing more than a quarter of the total $408 million funding for five states. The other states are Nebraska, Connecticut, Arkansas and North Dakota.

Ivy Tech's Lake County Campus gets $323,000 federal talent search grant

Ivy Tech is getting some federal funding to help students from disadvantaged backgrounds finish college. Ivy Tech's Lake County Campus has gotten more than $323,420 from the U.S. Department of Education's Talent Search Program. That will be used "to provide academic, career, and financial counseling," according to an announcement from U.S. Representative Frank Mrvan's office.

The Lake County campus of Ivy Tech Community College recently was awarded $323,420 from the U.S. Department of Education to provide academic, career and financial counseling to individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds who have the potential to succeed in higher education.
